to my only desire

Dating from the 15th century "The Lady and the Unicorn" is a series of 6 tapestries inspired by a German legend from the same period. Each trapestry employs identical elements: a lady and a unicorn on a kind of island. Of the 6 scenes, 5 illustrate a sense: hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch. The 6th, "To my only desire" on a contrary leaves free reign to the imagination.

Through their beauty and their sense of mystery, the images harbour a secret, just as in Balkenhol's work. "My sculptures don't tell stories. Something mysterious in concealed within them. It is not my task to reveal this, but the task of the viewer to discover it".

In a desire to bridge the past to the present, he accepts a legacy and, once the subject absorbed, reconstitutes it with his intellectual and cultural references.

Thus Balkenhol's woodcuts, imbue the images of The Lady and the Unicorn with a new dynamic, adding his own part of mystery to the secret surrounding the original work, leaving the beholder total freedom of interpretation.
