Marieke Bolhuis
is a Dutch visual artist whose sculptural and mixed-media works explore themes
of transformation, vulnerability, and identity. Her practice is rooted in
intuition, often resulting in surreal, emotionally charged figures caught in a
state of metamorphosis. Using materials such as foam, resin, textiles, and
mirror surfaces, she constructs poetic environments that engage the viewer on
both a psychological and physical level.
Recent exhibitions include the
SHIFT
group show at MOYA (Museum of Young Art, Oosterhout, 2025), the group exhibition
The Day
Dream at MPV Gallery in Oisterwijk
(curated by Reinoud van Vught), and her participation in the
ARTZUID 2025
Sculpture Biennale in Amsterdam. Her
large-scale solo work
SHE is GIANT was
on view at Singer Laren through mid-2025.
Marieke Bolhuis is represented by Kersgallery as part
of the
Sculpture Series at the 2025 edition of
Volta Basel. This international art fair features around 70 galleries from 29
countries, with the Sculpture Series placing a particular emphasis on
materiality and spatial presence. Bolhuis’ participation affirms her growing
international visibility.
Until the end of May 2025,
her powerful 3.1-meter-tall sculpture
SHE is GIANT
is on view at the forecourt of Singer Laren. The work merges elements of a
female centaur, a ship’s figurehead, and a giantess. It embodies the
female gaze
— a fusion of strength and vulnerability, not heroically macho but “a force of
nature.”
In 2025, Bolhuis also launched a
special edition titled
Snot Duck,
created in collaboration with
mo-artgallery,
marking a playful yet layered addition to her evolving body of work.
